Asbestos in the roof: what you may remove yourself

If your home was built before 1990 and has not had a major renovation, the national asbestos agency says it is likely to contain asbestos. The total national ban took effect on 31 December 2003.

Each state draws its line at the same area, then asks for different things past it.

New South Wales

At or under the line

up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos in total can be removed without a licence, if you first read and follow the Code of Practice: How to safely remove asbestos.

Past the line

A licensed asbestos removalist must remove more than 10 m² of non-friable asbestos, and any amount of friable asbestos.

SafeWork NSW still recommends a licensed professional for any amount of non-friable asbestos.

Queensland

At or under the line

A homeowner or owner-builder can remove 10 m² or less of non-friable asbestos without a certificate, and must still take safety precautions.

Past the line

To remove more than 10 m² of non-friable asbestos, home renovators and owner-builders need a certificate obtained under arrangements approved by Queensland Health.

Victoria

At or under the line

Unlicensed removal is limited to non-friable asbestos, capped at 10 m², and 1 hour in any 7 days of removal work.

Past the line

Removing more than 10 m² of asbestos, or any quantity of friable asbestos, needs a licensed asbestos removalist.

Wind classes, from N1 to C4

Under AS 4055 a house site gets a class of N1 to N6, C1 to C4. The class is worked out from its region, topography and shielding. Cyclonic areas are wind regions C and D.
