How the numbers on this site are made
Every figure links to where it came from, says whether the source is official, and shows the date we last checked it.
The site currently runs on 57 sourced figures, 27 of them from government or regulator pages. We do not estimate, average or round numbers into existence. If we cannot find a figure at a source we can name, the page says so instead of filling the gap.
Official and industry figures are not the same thing
Rules come from the body that writes them: SafeWork NSW, the Queensland asbestos site, the Victorian asbestos site, the NSW planning department, Business Queensland, the QBCC, Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Australian Building Codes Board. Those are marked official.
Prices are different. No Australian government body publishes what a roof costs, so every price here comes from a named industry guide or installer, and is labelled that way in the source list and in the calculator. A price from one Melbourne roofer is a data point, not a national average, and we try to write about it that way.
What happens when sources disagree
We print both. The clearest example is removing an old roof: one guide puts it at a rate barely a third of the other. Rather than pick a winner, the guides show the gap and tell you to have removal quoted as its own line. Where an official page contradicts a widely repeated claim, the official page wins and we say so.
How the figures stay current
Every figure carries a checked date and an expiry date. A script lists anything expired or close to it, and those figures get re-verified at the source before the next deploy. Prices are checked more often than rules, because they move faster.
What this site is not
We are not a government agency, a regulator or a roofing business, and we are not affiliated with any of the organisations whose pages we cite. Nothing here is legal, building or financial advice. Licensing, approval and asbestos rules are decided by the relevant authority, not by us.
How the site is paid for
When you ask for quotes, we may pass your request to roofing businesses, and they may pay us for that introduction. That has no bearing on the figures we publish or which sources we use. We carry no advertising.
Corrections
If a figure here is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source. Corrections that hold up get made the same week.
